Cross infection control

At the Dental Room we are determined to maintain a level of cleanliness and where possible sterility of all instruments and work surfaces. Our staff are trained in cross infection control and we strive to improve wherever possible. Some of the measures we take are:

All instruments which can be sterilised in an autoclave at 136oC for 3 minutes are sterilised after each use and where appropriate placed in sealed autoclave bags to prevent contamination. Sterilisation in an autoclave will kill all known bacteria and viruses likely to cause disease.
Where instruments can not be sterilised, every effort has been provided to use single use disposable instruments which are immediately discarded into clinical waste.
Any other instruments unable to be sterilised are wiped or sprayed with an alcohol based solution which kills the vast majority of harmful bacteria and viruses.
All handpieces are each use are disinfected and oiled before being sterilised in an autoclave.
Only distilled water used throughout the dental unit and valves prevent back siphonage from the handpieces.
The measures that we take are effective against HIV, Hepatitis A, B & C and MRSA
Gloves are provided for all treatment procedures and discarded into clinical waste at the end of each treatment. Occasionally gloves split and these are replaced immediately. Hands are also washed with an anti-microbial hand wash and the team wear face masks for all treatment procedures.
All clinical and sharps waste is disposed as medical waste through a licensed carrier for correct disposal.
We continue to strive to improve cross infection control at the practice and are currently looking at a number of other measures to enhance our cross infection control.
