Dentures (Relining)
Over a period of time the mouth changes shape after the teeth have been removed and there is often a gradual loss of fit of complete or partial dentures. At your regular dental examination, your dentist will check that the any dentures are continuing to fit well. If there is some loss of fit your dentist will suggest to you treatment which may improve the fit again and which may prolong the life of your dentures.
One of the ways the fit of dentures can be improved is by relining the denture. An impression is taken of the fitting surface of denture in the mouth and the denture is sent of to the laboratory usually for about a day. In the laboratory the dental technician pours up a model of the impression and adds extra acrylic (‘plastic’) to the fitting surface of the denture. When the denture is then fitted, the fitting surface is much more closely adapted to the shape of your mouth.
Relining a denture does deteriorate the denture structure to some degree but does help to reduce the changes in dental tissues due to the better adaptation to the mouth. A well fitting denture often helps prevent irregular changes of the bone and mouth tissues which would cause more major loss of fit of your dentures. So by maintaining well fitting dentures, the denture life is often prolonged and the changes in the dental tissues limited.
